This has been a very eventful academic year at WPI with regard to all things gaming! Here is a list of some of the major events that took place within both the Interactive Media & Game Development (IMGD) Program and the Game Development Club (GDC).

2007-07-01 Chuck Rich joins the IMGD technical faculty.


2007-08-21 WPI GDC hosts NSO Game Night.


2007-08-23 IMGD welcomes the class of 2011!


2007-A-Term Kent Quirk of LindenLab co-teaches IMGD-1001: The Game Development Process with Rob Lindeman, initiating an academia/industry fusion approach to IMGD course delivery.


2007-08-25 WPI GDC hosts New Developer Game Jam.


2007-09-07 WPI GDC hosts Halo LAN and Tournament.


2007-09-28 WPI GDC hosts Super Smash Bros. tournament.


2007-10-30 WPI GDC hosts the 2nd annual Costume!Dance!Party! Halloween event.


2007-10-31 After two experimental offerings, Joe Farbrook requests and receives approval from the full WPI faculty to begin offering the first-in-the-nation undergraduate course in Machinima as an IMGD elective.


2007-11-29 Webcasting of the weekly IMGD Speaker Series begins.


2007-12-05 WPI GDC hosts Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s event.


2008-01-18 Dean O'Donnell organizes a screenig on Playing Columbine: A true story of video game controversy, with a special Q&A session with the film's creator Danny Ledonne. A video of the session can be found here (1.9GB).


2008-C-Term Dean O'Donnell initiates the first "Master Class" in IMGD: Kevin Dill of Rockstar New England (formerly Mad Doc Software) delivers "Enemy AI in First Person Shooters."


2008-D-Term Second Master Class on "Practical Game Design: Balance in RTS's" delivered by Brian Sullivan of Iron Lore.


2008-01-25 WPI GDC hosts a 38-hour GameJam, attracting students from several area colleges, in support of the Massachusetts Game Challenge run by 38 Studios. Sponsors include AMD, WorldWinner, and Dejobaan Games. Artists from WorldWinner and 38 Studios come meet the students. Red Sox Ace Curt Schilling and son make an appearance to see how things are going 23 hours after the start.


2008-02-07 Rob Kay (lead designer) and Ike Adams (gameplay and interface engineer) of Rock Band from Harmonix Music give a talk on the making of music games as part of the weekly IMGD Speaker Series.


2008-03-01 WPI GDC successfully lobbies Nintendo to select WPI as one of only four sites in the US for the launch of Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii. Over 500 visitors converge on WPI to take part.


2008-03-11 Joe Farbrook advises an IQP consisting of two IMGD art students, Beth Beinke and Alex Schwartz, that produces a virtual replica of the WPI campus, and a physical, arcade-style kiosk that is placed in the Bartlett Center. Visitors can explore the WPI campus using a virtual Segway.


2008-03-29 WPI GDC hosts Saturday Night Gaming Extreme.


2008-03-29 WPI GDC hosts Stupid Wiimote Tricks workshop, led by GDC ex-Vice President Neal Orman, where interested WPI students learn about the various non-Wii uses of the Wiimote controller such as Head tracking, digital whiteboard, etc.


2008-04-05 WPI GDC hosts Mini-GameJam, a 12-hour event where WPI students who are interested in game development come together and form teams to create small games.


2008-04-15 WPI Project Presentation Day features the five IMGD MQPs and five IMGD-themed IQPs completed this year.


2008-04-17 The two-hour ShowFest 2008 showcases the work of IMGD and GDC faculty and students over the past year.


2008-04-19 WPI GDC hosts the Portal Level Design Workshop, led by GDC Vice President Alex Schwartz, where interested WPI students learn the basics of making a playable level for Valve's award-winning title Portal.


2008-04-20 WPI GDC hosts Rock Band tournament (based on stage performance and costumes, not on song score.)


2008-04-22 IMGD faculty members Rob Lindeman (tech) and Josh Rosenstock (art) are jointly awarded the 2008 Romeo L. Moruzzi Young Faculty Award for Innovation in Undergraduate Education for their efforts in synchronizing the IMGD-3000: Technical Game Development I and IMGD-3500: Artistic Game Development I courses. Tech and Art students form joint teams that span the courses to complete course projects.


2008-04-24 IMGD Speaker Series completes another successful year.


2008-04-29 IMGD Freshmen Adrian Mejia, Morgan Quirk, and Andrew Tremblay take third place ($1,000 cash award) in the Massachusetts Game Challenge sponsored by 38 Studios.
